National Climate Policy

In 1997 in Kyoto the European Union and its member countries committed themselves to reducing greenhouse gases by 8% (also see: Kyoto Protocol). As the various member countries have different preconditions for achieving emission reductions. C conditions are differing, the EU reduction target has been split between the member countries in different shares ('Burden Sharing Agreement').
Austria adopted within the EU-15 a legally binding commitment, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the first commitment period from 2008-2012 by 13% in comparison to the basis year 1990. To reach this goal, the Austrian federal government and the federal states (Länder) adopted in 2002 a common climate strategy. This strategy was evaluated in 2006 and was used as the basis for the new national climate strategy which was adopted from the ministerial council on 21 March 2007.
The climate strategy 2007 is based on a broad mix of various, mainly national measures. The Climate Strategy 2007 is mainly based on national measures (industry, thermal renovation of houses, an expansion of public transport). Additionally, Austria uses the project related flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. The purchasing target of the Austrian JI/CDM Programme is 45 million tons of Emission Reductions in the time between 2008-2012.
