Joint Implementation (JI)

print page

Under Joint Implementation (Article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol) an Annex I country or an authorised institution or enterprise from an Annex I country A participates in an emission reducing project in another Annex I country B. Country A receives a certain amount of the resulting Emission Reduction Units (ERUs).

Two different project cycles are distinguished for JI projects:

  • Track 1: is a strongly simplified procedure, which can, however, only be applied if the following approval criteria have been met:

Host country and the Republic of Austria...

  1. are parties to the Kyoto Protocol;
  2. have a national system for identification of greenhouse gas emissions from sources and for storage using sinks;
  3. have a national registry compliant with international requirements;
  4. have submitted a report for determining their initial assigned amounts;
  5. annually submit a current inventory protocol fully compliant with the Kyoto Protocol requirements.

JI projects performed under Track 1 are subject to no international requirements except for the criterion of additionality.

The verification of the greenhouse emissions can be performed by the host country itself, which then transfers the corresponding number of ERUs into the registry of the Republic of Austria following completed verification of the emissions reductions.

  • Track 2: If the approval criteria for Track 1 are not met, Track 2 becomes applicable. The project cycle pursuant to Track 2 is explained in detail under describing the implementation of a Joint Implementation Project.
